Like the buses, the taxi service in Qatar is overseen by Mowasalat, under the Karwa banner. The distinctive green fleet consists of modern air-conditioned vehicles. The service has a local reputation for being over-stretched, with not enough cars available to meet demand at peak times, which can lead to difficulties when ordering or hailing a taxi. The operator claims to be in the process of expanding the fleet to address the problem.
Pick-ups can be arranged by calling 4458 8888, but there may be a long wait for the vehicle to arrive. It is permitted to hail a cab from the street, but again this can be difficult at busy times. Cabs also congregate for pick-ups at malls and hotels, where queues form awaiting taxis, and this is often the most successful method of securing a ride.
All cabs are metered. There is an initial charge of QR 4, and then a rate of QR 1.20 per kilometre during the day and QR 1.80 per Km. The latter rate is also charged for longer distance journeys. Telephone bookings add an extra QR 4 to the fare.
Any complaints about the service or individual drivers can be made directly to Mowasalat.
